5 Best Road Trips in Maui You Can't Miss

ReefRide Team·6 min read·

Maui is a driver's paradise. With winding coastal highways, dramatic cliffside roads, and lush jungle corridors, every mile tells a story. Here are the five drives you absolutely need to experience.

1. The Road to Hana

The most famous drive in Hawaii — and for good reason. This 64-mile stretch along Maui's northeastern coast features 620 curves and 59 bridges. Start early, pack snacks, and stop at Twin Falls, Wai'anapanapa State Park (with its black sand beach), and the Pools of 'Ohe'o.

Pro tip: A Jeep or SUV handles the narrow roads and occasional unpaved detours much better than a sedan.

2. Haleakala Summit

Drive 10,023 feet above sea level to watch the sunrise from Haleakala crater. The road climbs through multiple climate zones — from tropical to alpine — in about 90 minutes. Reservations are required for sunrise viewing.

3. West Maui Loop (Kahekili Highway)

Often called the "other Road to Hana," this rugged coastal drive along Highway 340 is less crowded and equally spectacular. One-lane bridges, 800-foot cliffs, and virtually no guardrails make it an adventure.

4. Upcountry Maui

Explore the pastoral highlands of Kula and Makawao. Lavender farms, protea gardens, and the Ali'i Kula Lavender Farm offer a completely different side of Maui. The drive through rolling green hills feels more like New Zealand than Hawaii.

5. South Shore to La Perouse Bay

Follow the road past Wailea and Makena until pavement ends at La Perouse Bay. Here you'll find a vast lava field, tide pools, and spinner dolphins. It's a perfect morning drive before the wind picks up.
