Pick your dates, choose a vehicle, and complete checkout — the whole process takes about 5 minutes. You'll need a valid driver's license (held for at least 1 year), a credit or debit card, and a quick selfie for ID verification. Once confirmed, we'll send you a booking confirmation with your airport pickup details (or delivery details if you added that option).

How far in advance should I book?

We recommend booking at least 3–5 days ahead, especially during peak season (December–March and June–August). Last-minute bookings are possible if vehicles are available, but popular models like Jeep Wranglers sell out fast. The earlier you book, the more choices you'll have.

What payment methods do you accept?

Accepted Answer

We accept all major credit and debit cards — Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover. Payment is processed securely through Stripe. We currently don't accept cash, PayPal, or cryptocurrency. The card must be in the primary driver's name.

Is there a security deposit?

Accepted Answer

Yes, a refundable security hold of $250 is placed on your card at the time of booking. This is not a charge — it's a temporary hold that's released within 5 business days after you return the vehicle in good condition. The hold covers potential damage, traffic violations, or fuel replacement.

Can I book for someone else?

Accepted Answer

The person driving must be the one who completes the booking and ID verification. However, you can add an additional authorized driver during checkout for $10/day. Both drivers must meet our age and license requirements (21+ with a valid license held for at least 1 year).

Do you offer discounts?

Accepted Answer

Yes! We offer several ways to save: weekly rentals (7+ days) get 15% off automatically, returning customers get 10% off their next booking, and military/first responder discounts of 10% are available with valid ID. We also run seasonal promotions — follow us on social media or sign up for our newsletter to stay in the loop.

How does airport pickup work?

Free airport pickup is included on all four islands. Here's how it works: (1) Text or call the number in your confirmation when you land. (2) Head to the designated pickup area (we'll send directions 24 hours before). (3) Our crew member meets you with the car, walks you through a quick vehicle check, and you're on your way — usually within 15 minutes of your call. We monitor your flight, so if it's early or late, we adjust automatically.

Can you deliver to my hotel or Airbnb?

Yes — hotel, Airbnb, and vacation rental delivery is available as a paid add-on at checkout. Pricing depends on distance from the airport. Just enter your address during booking and you'll see the delivery fee before you confirm.

Question 9

Can I pick up on a different island?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. We operate independently on each island, so you can book a car on Oahu for one leg of your trip and a separate car on Maui for another. Just create separate bookings for each island. We can't transfer vehicles between islands, but we'll make sure each car is waiting for you when you arrive.

What if my flight is delayed?

No worries — we track your flight in real time and adjust your pickup window automatically. There's no late fee and no need to call us (though you're welcome to). If your flight is significantly delayed (6+ hours), we'll reach out to confirm your updated arrival time. Your car will be ready when you are.

Question 11

How does return work?

On the morning of your return, just text our crew and meet at the airport drop-off zone — or have us pick the car up from your hotel/Airbnb for the same fee as delivery. Make sure the car has the same fuel level as when you received it (we note it at pickup). A crew member will do a quick walk-around inspection, and you're done. The security deposit hold is released within 5 business days.

Can I drop off at a different location?

Yes! One-way drop-offs within the same island are available — airport-to-airport is included, and hotel/Airbnb drop-off is the same fee as the delivery add-on. Just let us know the return address at checkout and we'll coordinate the pickup.

Are the cars new?

Every vehicle in our fleet is 2022 or newer. We rotate vehicles out after 2 years or 40,000 miles, whichever comes first. All cars are maintained by certified local mechanics and undergo a multi-point safety inspection before every rental — brakes, tires, fluids, lights, and a full interior deep-clean.

Do you have child or booster seats?

Yes! We offer rear-facing infant seats, forward-facing toddler seats, and booster seats for older kids. They're $5/day each (max $25 per rental). Add them during checkout and they'll be installed and ready when your car arrives. Hawaii law requires child restraints for children under 4 and booster seats for ages 4–7.

Is there GPS navigation?

Can I take the car off-road?

Accepted Answer

Only vehicles explicitly designated for off-road use (Jeep Wranglers and select 4WD SUVs) may be driven on unpaved roads. This includes the Mauna Kea summit road on the Big Island and the Polihale access road on Kauai. Driving a non-4WD vehicle on unpaved roads voids the damage waiver. Check your vehicle's off-road eligibility at checkout.

Are there mileage limits?

Nope! Every ReefRide rental includes unlimited mileage. Drive the full loop around the Big Island, take the Road to Hana twice, explore every beach on Kauai — it's all included. The only restriction is that vehicles must stay on the island where they were rented.

Question 19

What's included for free?

Accepted Answer

Every rental includes state-required liability insurance at no extra cost. This covers third-party bodily injury and property damage if you're at fault in an accident. It does NOT cover damage to the rental vehicle itself, theft, or your personal belongings. For that, you'll want to add Premium Protection.

Question 20

What does Premium Protection cover?

Premium Protection ($18/day) is our comprehensive plan that covers: collision damage to the rental vehicle, theft or attempted theft, vandalism, weather damage, personal belongings up to $1,000, and emergency medical transport. It also reduces your deductible from $2,500 to $0. Most renters add it for total peace of mind.

Can I use my own car insurance?

Many personal auto insurance policies and credit cards offer rental car coverage. We recommend checking with your provider before your trip. If your personal insurance covers rental vehicles in Hawaii, you can decline our Premium Protection. Just note that you'll be responsible for the deductible ($2,500) if you don't add our coverage.

What happens if I get a flat tire?

Flat tires from normal road hazards are covered at no charge — just call our 24/7 roadside line and we'll send someone to change it or tow the vehicle. If the tire damage is caused by off-road driving in a non-4WD vehicle or by driving on restricted roads, the replacement cost may apply. All our vehicles have a spare tire and jack in the trunk.

What's the deductible?

Without Premium Protection, the deductible is $2,500 — meaning you'd pay up to $2,500 for any damage to the vehicle. With Premium Protection ($18/day), the deductible drops to $0. We strongly recommend adding it, especially for longer trips or if you're planning to drive mountain roads or remote areas.

Driving on Oahu

Oahu is the most urban island — Honolulu traffic can be heavy during rush hours (6:30–8:30 AM and 3:30–6 PM), so plan around it. Outside the city, roads are easy and well-paved. The full island loop via Kamehameha Highway takes about 2.5 hours without stops. Top drives: North Shore for surf and shave ice, windward coast for Lanikai and Kailua, and the southeast for Hanauma Bay and Makapuu. A sedan is all you need here.

Driving on Maui

Maui is the road-trip island. The Road to Hana is the star — 620 curves, 59 bridges, and a full day of waterfalls and black sand beaches. Book an SUV if you want to do the full Hana loop (the back road is unpaved). The drive to Haleakala summit for sunrise is a 2-hour climb with switchbacks — bring warm layers. West Maui (Ka'anapali, Lahaina) has easy, flat coastal roads. Pro tip: gas stations are scarce on the Hana Highway, so fill up in Pa'ia.

The Big Island is HUGE — it takes 5–6 hours to drive the full loop without stops. The Kohala Coast (west) is dry and sunny; the Hilo side (east) is lush and rainy. Volcanoes National Park is a must — plan a half day. If you want to drive to the Mauna Kea summit, you NEED a 4WD vehicle (the road above the visitor station is steep and unpaved). The Saddle Road connecting east and west is well-paved and scenic. Don't try to see everything in one day.

Kauai is small and has one main road that doesn't connect all the way around (the Na Pali cliffs block it). Plan separate day trips: north to Hanalei and Ke'e Beach, west to Waimea Canyon and Polihale. The north shore has several one-lane bridges — yield to oncoming traffic and take your time. If you want to reach Polihale Beach on the west side, you'll need 4WD for the dirt access road. A sedan handles everything else. The speed of life here is slow — enjoy it.

A few things that are different from the mainland: (1) Speed limits are lower than you'd expect — 25–35 mph in most areas, 55 mph max on highways. (2) Locals drive slow and courteous — the "shaka wave" thank-you is real. (3) Watch for one-lane bridges on Maui and Kauai — yield to whoever entered first. (4) Flash floods happen fast after rain, especially in valleys — never cross a flooded road. (5) Don't leave valuables visible in a parked car, especially at trailheads. (6) Gas is more expensive than the mainland ($5–6/gallon) — budget accordingly.

Can I cancel my booking?

Yes! Our cancellation policy is straightforward: cancel 48+ hours before pickup for a full refund, 24–48 hours before for a 50% refund, or less than 24 hours / no-show for no refund. Can I change my dates?

Yes, you can modify your dates up to 24 hours before your original pickup time, subject to vehicle availability. If the new dates are more expensive (peak season, longer duration), you'll pay the difference. If they're cheaper, we'll refund the difference. Can I switch to a different car?

Vehicle changes are subject to availability. If you want to upgrade (e.g., from a sedan to a Jeep), we'll adjust the price accordingly. Downgrades are also possible with a refund of the difference. Changes can be made up to 24 hours before pickup. Just email aloha@reefride.co with your booking number and preferred vehicle.

Can I extend my rental?

Usually, yes! Extensions depend on whether the vehicle is booked after your return date. Text or call our crew at least 12 hours before your original return time and we'll check availability. If the same car isn't available, we can often arrange a swap to a similar vehicle at no extra hassle. Extended days are billed at the same daily rate.

What if I return the car late?

We give a 1-hour grace period on returns. After that, a half-day charge applies for returns up to 3 hours late, and a full extra day is charged for anything beyond 3 hours. If you know you'll be late, let us know in advance — we're usually flexible and can work with you as long as it doesn't affect the next reservation.

I was in an accident

First: make sure everyone is safe and call 911 if there are any injuries. Then: (1) Move the vehicle to a safe spot if possible. (2) Exchange info with the other party — names, phone numbers, insurance, license plates. (3) Take photos of everything: all vehicles, damage, the road, and the surrounding area. (4) Call our 24/7 emergency line at (808) 555-0199. We'll guide you through next steps, coordinate with insurance, and arrange a replacement vehicle if needed. Do NOT admit fault at the scene.

The car broke down

Call our 24/7 roadside assistance at (808) 555-0199. Pull over to a safe location, turn on your hazard lights, and stay with the vehicle if it's safe to do so. We'll dispatch a local mechanic or tow truck — average response time is 30–45 minutes depending on your location. If the issue can't be fixed on the spot, we'll arrange a replacement vehicle at no extra cost.

I'm locked out of the vehicle

Accepted Answer

Call (808) 555-0199 and we'll help immediately. For many of our newer vehicles, we can unlock the doors remotely within minutes. If remote unlock isn't available for your vehicle, we'll dispatch a crew member with a spare key. Lockout service is free and included with every rental — no towing company needed.

Question 37

I got a flat tire

Accepted Answer

Call (808) 555-0199 for roadside assistance. All our vehicles have a spare tire and jack in the trunk — if you're comfortable changing it yourself, go for it. Otherwise, our roadside team will come to you and handle it. Flat tire service is included at no extra charge. If the spare needs to be used, we'll arrange a proper tire replacement at no cost to you (unless the damage was caused by off-road driving in a non-4WD vehicle).

Question 38

I got a traffic ticket

Accepted Answer

Traffic violations and parking tickets are the renter's responsibility. If a ticket is mailed to us (photo enforcement, parking), we'll forward it to you and charge a $25 administrative fee per violation to the card on file. Common things to watch for in Hawaii: speed cameras on some highways, parking meter enforcement in Waikiki and Lahaina, and no-parking zones at popular beaches. When in doubt, use paid lots — they're usually cheap ($5–10/day).

The car was stolen or broken into

Accepted Answer

Call 911 immediately to file a police report, then call us at (808) 555-0199. If the car was stolen, we'll need the police report number to process the insurance claim. If it was broken into, document all damage and any missing items with photos. Premium Protection covers theft and personal belongings up to $1,000. Without Premium Protection, you may be liable for the vehicle's value up to the deductible amount. Never leave valuables visible in a parked car — especially at trailheads and beaches.

What are the age requirements?

You must be at least 21 years old to rent with ReefRide. Drivers aged 21–24 can rent but are limited to sedans and standard SUVs (no Jeeps or convertibles). Drivers 25 and older can rent any vehicle in our fleet. There's no maximum age limit. All drivers must hold a valid license that has been active for at least 1 year.

Can I use an international driver's license?

Yes! We welcome international visitors. You'll need your original valid driver's license from your home country. If your license is not in English, you'll also need an International Driving Permit (IDP) as a translation — get this from your home country before you travel. We accept licenses from all countries. The ID verification process works the same as for US licenses.

What's the fuel policy?

We hand you the car with a full tank and ask that you return it full. If the tank isn't full on return, we'll charge a refueling fee at current island gas prices plus a $15 service charge. Pro tip: gas on the islands is pricier than the mainland ($5–6/gallon), and some areas have very few stations (looking at you, Hana Highway). Fill up whenever you see a station on remote routes.

Can I bring my pet?

Small pets (under 40 lbs) are allowed in our vehicles with a $35 pet fee added at checkout. The vehicle must be returned free of pet hair and odor — excessive cleaning may result in an additional charge. We ask that pets be secured in a carrier or harness while the vehicle is moving. Service animals are always welcome at no extra charge (no documentation required).

Can I smoke in the car?

All ReefRide vehicles are strictly non-smoking. This includes cigarettes, vapes, and any other substances. If the vehicle is returned with smoke odor, a $250 deep-cleaning fee will be charged to the card on file. This policy exists to protect the next renter's experience.
