A surreal forest of lava-encased tree molds created when a 1790 lava flow swept through an ohia forest. The fast-flowing lava hardened around the trunks, and when the trees burned away they left hollow lava pillars standing like ghostly sentinels. A short, paved loop trail winds through the formations.
Tip: The walk takes about 20 minutes. Combine with a visit to nearby Kapoho Tide Pools and the Pahoa town farmers market.
