Puuhonua o Honaunau (Place of Refuge)
AttractionHonaunau, ~40 min from KonaHistoricalCulturalSnorkeling
This sacred National Historical Park preserves a 180-acre royal compound where ancient Hawaiians who broke kapu (sacred laws) could seek sanctuary. The reconstructed heiau (temple), hand-carved ki'i (wooden images), and stone walls along the coast are hauntingly beautiful. The adjacent Two Step beach has incredible snorkeling.
Tip: Walk the self-guided trail and read the interpretive signs — the history is fascinating. The snorkeling at Two Step (just north of the park entrance) is free and world-class.
