Driving Destination~1 hr 30 min from KonaScenic4WD NeededHike
Known as the Valley of the Kings, Waipio is a mile-wide, 2,000-foot-deep valley carved by waterfalls and rivers on the Hamakua Coast. The lookout at the top provides a sweeping view of the black sand beach, taro fields, and 1,400-foot Hi'ilawe Falls in the distance. Access to the valley floor is restricted.
Tip: The road down to the valley floor is extremely steep (25% grade) and requires 4WD. Most visitors enjoy the view from the lookout, which is easily accessible by car.
