The green, cool slopes of Haleakala above 2,000 feet are Maui's agricultural heart. Drive the winding Kula Highway past lavender farms, protea flower fields, and organic vegetable operations before stopping in Makawao — a paniolo (cowboy) town with a bohemian art scene, fantastic galleries, and the best cream puffs in Hawaii at Komoda's Bakery.
Tip: Stop at Komoda Store & Bakery in Makawao for cream puffs (arrive early — they sell out by noon). The Kula Country Farms has a great farm stand on weekends.
